When Should You Prune Trees in Teton Valley, Idaho?

We get asked this one a lot: “When should I have my trees pruned?”

For routine pruning, late fall, winter, and early spring are often great times to get the job done here in Teton Valley.

Once the leaves have dropped, it's much easier to see the structure of the tree and identify dead, damaged, or poorly placed branches. The tree is also going into its dormant season, so it's a good time to do some maintenance before everything starts growing again in the spring.

Late fall is one of our favorite times to get ahead of it. The leaves are off, the tree's structure is easy to see, and you can get your trees cleaned up before winter really sets in.

Winter and early spring can work well too, depending on the tree and what we're trying to accomplish. Aspen, cottonwood, spruce, and other trees all have their own quirks, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

Of course, if you've got a dead limb, storm damage, or a tree that's becoming hazardous, don't wait for the “right season.”

Those problems are worth addressing whenever they come up.

For routine tree pruning, though, don't wait until spring when everyone is thinking about their trees. Late fall is a great time to take a look, make a plan, and get ahead of the busy season.
